Things are going swimmingly

I finally signed Porgie up for a swimming class at the local YMCA. I had never been to a YMCA before, but for some reason I thought it would be relatively cheap. Apparently I am an idiot, because the YMCA is expensive. We looked at the price for a family membership. It was $780. SEVEN HUNDRED AND EIGHTY DOLLARS!!!

Needless to say, we didn't get the family membership. Instead, I signed Porgie up as a program member for $100. I had no idea that the YMCA was for the rich bitches. In order to get your money's worth, you would have to go to the Y everyday. Whatever. I am not paying $780 to play in the pool with Porgie. I'll just put her in the bathtub instead.

I have to admit, I am pretty excited about the swimming class. I can't wait to see Porgie's reaction to the pool. Also, I can't wait to put her in the adorable bathing suit I bought her. Don't worry, I'll take plenty of pictures.

On a different note, I am getting ready to buy new window treatments for my living room. Currently, we just have some ugly vertical blinds. These blinds came with the house - I despise them.

I have no shame. I didn't even clear off my tables before I snapped this picture.

At first, I wanted to put up roller blinds and simple sheers (I want to let in the natural sunlight, but still have privacy). I wanted roller blinds because they are the safest option for Porgie. However, I'm worried that the cats will snag the sheers and ruin them. So, I have been thinking about foregoing the roller blinds and sheers, and just putting up white curtains, like these.

I have the hardest time making decisions. What do you think I should do?

Those curtains are really nice and somewhat similiar to what we have in our living room. The only thing I dislike about curtains is that when it is super sunny and bright, in order not to be blinded, we have to close the curtains. This makes me feel closed in. Perhaps sometime of curtain and sheer so that there would be some protection against glare when the curtains are open. I am not very good with decisions either so good luck and let us know what you decide!

Oh, and have fun at swimming. I took 2 infant/parent swim classes with Aiden and we both loved it. My husband is swimming with Aiden this very minute. i can't wait until Caileigh is a little older and then we can go as a family! Be sure to take photos!

vertical blinds are evil. a decorator's worst nightmare. they remind me of a college dorm. not to mention they are soooo eighties.

here's my "assvice" on the window treatment situation: the problem you are going to run into is you have a wide, relatively short window. If you put curtains on the window, it may look a bit awkward. and you may also have problem w/ the curtains getting trapped behind the couch so that you can't easily pull them closed. not to mention that they won't really keep the light out/heat from escaping in the winter/cool from escaping in the summer. this may not be important to you depending on your exposure (n, s, e, w).

also, i haven't had much luck w/ target draperies. i would look into jc penney or pottery barn (i know pottery barn is exceedingly expensive but they have outstanding quality).

i know they are expensive, but i'd opt for roman shades. american blind and wallpaper factory has really great prices and they can send you fabric samples in the mail. alterately, i'd do cellular shades (which are nice and insulated) or just go for the gusto and choose plantation shutters w/ a nice cornice.

of course, ANYTHING is better than vertical blinds...ew. you need to remove those...immediately!

congrats on signing porgie up for swimming! oh ya, and i forgot to mention to you how expensive the ymca memberships are. yikes.

ps...looking forward to seeing the bathing suit pics. i have been on the hunt for a really great one for mikaela, but i haven't found anything that knocks my socks off. where did you get yours??

Ashely,
Thanks for your input. I didn't consider the curtains and sheers. Good Idea.

Tiffany,
I agree - vertical blinds are awful. The lady we bought our house from told me that she just had them installed 2 years ago. I don't know why she would waste her money on those tacky ass blinds.

I forgot to mention that I hate the windows in this house. We have 20 windows, but they are all very small. John agrees with you about the whole curtains getting caught behind the couch thing. We have gotten into approximately 87 arguements about it.

I think roman shades might be a good option. I'll have to check out styles and prices first. Thanks for the tip.

I got Porgie's bathing suit at Babies r us. They had lots of adorable two piece swim suits, but I opted for a regular old one piece. Maybe its just me, but it feels creepy and weird to put an eight month old in a bikini.

Yeah, the Y is expensive. Isn't that so weird? I tried to sign up for it when I was pregnant so I could swim, but balked at the price. So I used my friend's neighborhood's pool instead.

Tiffany gave you very nice advice on the curtains. I have none since my mother sewed all the curtains we have in the house and I have no curtain-related taste of my own. Only--don't make it too dark in there.

Your house looks very clean and neat! And grown-up!

We have a ton of super-adorable bathing suits and diaper covers for Baby that were handed down to us. The cuteness is undeniable. I guess I didn't realize babies could swim though (despite owning baby bathing suits...) What a fun idea!

Eva,
Thanks for the compliments. I really hate this house, so your kindness is much appreciated.

It is kind of off the topic, but housing costs in New Jersey are insanely expensive. Our house in Kentucky was way nicer/bigger and cost about 1/2 of what this house cost. I have had so many problems trying to fit our furniture into this house.

I agree - baby bathing suit are too cute.

I always thought of the YMCA being there for regular class folks - where did I get that idea? That kind of money is absurd! I've wanted to do swimming classes for my little guy but the community center doesn't offer them until they're one year old. And there's no where else nearby that does swimming in our small town. I know you'll have lots of fun!

My cats have shredded every piece of window treatment imaginable. We currently have ugly horizontal blinds that have been on the windows since we bought our house 7 years ago. I've never hung a curtain because I know from past experience the little bastards shred them to pieces. I once spent a lot of money on very pretty, sheer, curtains only to have the cats snag the heck out of them.

They've also destroyed our couches to the point that I have to have tape on the corners to hold the stuffing in and slip covers on at all times. No amount of discipline does anything to deter them nor any other cat repellents - we've tried them all.

When we do finally get new furniture, the first thing that will happen is that the cats will have an appointment for the vet for laser de-clawing.

christy - OMG i thought i was the only one who felt that way!!!! :))the two piece situation is why i haven't bought mikaela a bathing suit! all the bathing suits i am finding are two piece - NOOOOOO! i refuse to put my infant in a bikini. call me old fashioned, but that's just how i roll. ;) i'm going to check out babies r us and see what i can find.

good luck w/ the window treatment dilemma.

In fairness vertical blinds are a great solution for very large windows, particularly when the drop is long.

I would take a look at these blinds, http://www.blinds-2go.co.uk/window-blinds.asp?colour=110

Difficult to see on the web just how good they are. You can control the light very effectively.

Other than that what about wood blinds? I would look at the 50mm slat size, more light control.

I think roller blinds make a fantastic and practical window dressing and they work eaqually well in both small and larger windows.
