Let's talk about the kids

I realized that I didn't actually explain the implant process in my last post.  Basically, the doctor inserted three screw thingies (yes, that is the technical term) into my jaw.  Then the doctor stitched the incisions and sent me home.  In 4 months I'll go back and the doctor will place a post on top of each screw thingie.  Then my regular dentist will fit a crown on top of the post.  So, hopefully my upper teeth will be completely finished by late this summer.

Moving on.  My baby boy is in the golden age of babyhood right now.  He is just so delightful to be around!  He is giggly and smiley and affectionate.  He can't crawl yet, so I get to cuddle with him on my lap most of the day.  He imitates noises and sounds that we make (he is currently obsessed with the kiss sound).  I just love this little guy to pieces.

My daughter is quickly approaching her 6th birthday.  SIX YEARS OLD!  She is an amazing kid.  She reads, she writes, she adds, she subtractions.  She is smart and curious and just generally excited about everything in life.  Lately we have been working on subtraction with borrowing, and it astounds me that she actually understands these concepts.  Porgie loves learning.  The child will beg me to let her do phonics or math or whatever.   Little weirdo.

In stark contrast to his sister, Izzy isn't really a pencil and paper type of kid.  Instead, my big boy like to run and jump and climb!  Unlike Porgie, Izzy will actually play with his toys.  He is currently obsessed with Transformers, Luigi (you know, Mario's brother), and Link (from Legend of Zelda).  He spends most of his day running around the house with a sword and a shield.  His creativity and enthusiasm is boundless.

My kids and I have been having loads of fun lately.  We have really hit our stride in the last few weeks.

Dentally Retarded Part 2

Remember that last post where I told you that I wasn't allowed to nurse my baby for 24 hours?  Well, I only made it 12 hours.  I just couldn't bare it anymore, so I nursed him.  I was terrified that I was going to harm him with all the drugs in my system, but we all lived to tell the tale, so I am assuming most of the drugs were already out of my system.

I had oral surgery on Monday.  If you're a long time reader, you might remember that I am congenitally missing 5 adult teeth.  I still had all 5 baby teeth until 2010, when I had 4 of them removed (premolars) so that I could get braces.  I left one baby tooth in place, because it was near the front of my mouth (canine tooth).

My braces were removed in December, and I have been procrastinating in getting those missing teeth replaced.  I knew I was getting dental implants, so I knew that I would be sedated for the procedure.  I was trying to wait until the baby was big enough to eat and drink from a cup before I had the procedure done.  At the beginning of April, I decided that it was time to get started.  After finally meeting with the oral surgeon, I decided to have my top teeth done first (I can only do a few at a time because I am not a millionaire - dental implants are expensive!).

Last Monday I had 3 implants placed in my maxilla. It wasn't nearly as bad as I thought it was going to be.  I never experienced any pain.  The doctor prescribed Vicodin, but I never took even one pill.  It was really pretty easy.  The only problem I encountered was getting my retainer to fit.  I guess my gums are swollen, so I haven't been able to wear it all week.  I actually took my retainer to the orthodontist this morning to have a fake tooth added (to fill the spot where the baby canine tooth was).  I should get my altered retainer back on Tuesday, and then I won't feel so self-conscious about my smile.  I am keeping my fingers crossed that it will actually fit correctly.

It is all very exciting, and I can't wait until everything is DONE.  I plan on starting on the bottom teeth (2 premolars) in the fall.  So, that is what I have been up to lately.

Sorry for the lack of blogging

I had oral surgery today (more on that later), and I am currently listening to the devastating screams of a very hungry baby.  I had IV sedation, and I am not allowed to nurse him for 24 hours.  This wouldn't be such a huge deal if my baby could drink from a bottle.  He can't.  I never really even tried to get him to take a bottle, and now I am suffering through the consequences.  My baby is hungry and sad.  He wants his mama's boobs in a bad way.  And it is breaking my heart.  I don't know how we are going to make it through the night.  Wish me luck.

complaints about naps

Sleep.  My ongoing saga with sleep.  Will I ever stop talking about it?

Guppy seems to be in nap limbo right now.  He is having trouble settling down for his third nap, which usually occurs around 4:30pm.  When he skips this nap, he is miserable by 5:30.  But I can't put him down for the night at 5:30.  That is right in the middle of dinner and additionally, I think that would produce a 5 or 6am wake-up time (call me crazy, but I am more of a 7 or 8am kind of girl).  So, I have the lovely task of keeping him up until 6:30 or 7:00pm.  Pure torture.

On the days when he actually does take the third nap at 4:30pm, he can't seem to settle down and go to sleep at 8:00pm.  His bedtime on those nights is closer to 9pm.  Ugh.  I'd rather have him go to bed around 7pm, so I have been trying to cut out the last nap and use Moxie's 2-3-4 schedule.  The problem is that he doesn't take long naps, which results in a bedtime of 5 or 5:30pm if I follow that schedule, and that just isn't possible.  This is just a phase and it will pass, but I feel like I am torturing the poor child by keeping him awake for so long.

Look at my BIG baby!  I can't believe he is ready for just two naps a day.  He is growing and changing so fast.

I can no longer nag my husband

Remember when I wrote that post about my husband getting a speeding ticket?  I jinxed myself, and got a fucking ticket this morning.  GAH!  It was my first ticket.  Like EVER.  I am pretty devastated about the whole thing.  My good record is forever tarnished.

Jazzy

Did I tell you that I enrolled Porgie and Izzy in a dance class last Fall?  Well, I did.  Originally, I wanted the kids to participate in a more gender neutral activity (like karate or swimming), but my son cried and cried and cried to join dance class with his sissy.  I wanted to enroll Porgie in Ballet class again, but then Izzy wouldn't have been able to dance with her (she would have been in the 5-8 year old class and, at the time, Izzy was only 3 years old).  So we enrolled them in a jazz class that would allow them to dance together.

The recital costumes finally arrived...

My husband was kind of upset about Izzy's outfit.  He thinks that the sparkly purple shirt is a little too girly.  But Izzy LOVES his costume.  I think he looks pretty cute too.
