Zanzibar Shmanzibar

Have you ever got all wrapped up in a theme? Maybe its the elementary teacher coming out in me, but I LOVE themes. When I was pregnant, John and I fell in love with the "Zanzibar" theme. Since we decided not to find out the sex of our baby, this was a great gender neutral design.

So, we took our hard earned cash, and bought everything "Zanzibar."

We bought the bumper.

We bought the bed skirt.

We bought the valances and matching curtains.

We bought the diaper holder thingy.

We bought the mobile.

We even bought the "Zanzibar" light switch cover.

When Porgie started eating solids, of course we bought her the "Zanzibar" highchair.

Everything was fine and dandy, until we tried to wash our wonderful purchase. The highchair cover is DRY CLEAN ONLY. I am such a dumb ass.

Lesson learned: Make sure your theme is practical, not just pretty.

I wash EVERYTHING! Even Maggie's little styrofoam-bead-stuffed-squishy-pillows. I'm pretty sure you could machine wash it in Wool1te in the gentle cycle. Just don't put it in the dryer.

I had a suede skirt (back when I was young & thin) and I used to machine wash that. My MIL thought I was nuts when I told her that I washed it. But then I informed her that cows get wet.

At any rate, I love the theme!!

I had the same problem with my cover...I tossed it. I now have a naked highcahir. LOL

It's very cute! We like themes, too. K's is planes, trains and automobiles.

BTW, can I add you to my blog list?

lmao. very well-written post...rising action, climax, and a wise lesson. point taken.

we have kind of a jungle theme as well but it's a lot more haphazard...just a lot of stuff with giraffes and monkeys and elephants.

the dryclean only highchair cover must have been designed by very evil people!

Suz,
I love this theme too - hence the LIGHT SWITCH COVER!

Cat,
Thanks for the suggestion. I am probably going to try to wash the highchair cover today. There is no way in hell I can have it dry cleaned every week.

Margo,
If the damn cover gets ruined in the washing machine, I'll have a naked highchair too.

S.,
Of course you can add me to your blog list. Thanks! I am so rude that I just added you to my list without asking. I hope it is okay.

Bon,
Yes, the people who made this highchair are definitely evil. They sucked me in with their adorable pictures of giraffes, and then broke my heart.

I got the Eddie Bauer wooden high chair. Looks really pretty...but cleaning it - especially the cloth - is a nightmare. So I am hanging up right next to ya on the wrungs of dumb ass. :)

And for what it's worth...I love your Zanzibar stuff. It's cute!

Wow I never got into a theme! I've always been too lazy to go to the effort of choosing and finding all the things ;-) but it definantly looks cute! And as for the high chair hopefully it washes okay today!

YES, YOU CAN WASH IT!

Read here and you won't feel so bad:

http://messageboards.ivillage.com/n/mb/message.asp?webtag=iv-prplayaug06n&msg=9650.1&x=y

See? Other people did that too.

Anyway you can totally wash it. Just not dry it on high, maybe.

Or, you could just use it without the cover.

My high chair was SIX DOLLARS BRAND NEW from the Salvation Army and only has vinyl. I just wipe it down. All my stuff (bedskirt, curtain) my mom made. We're cheap people.

Love your crib, by the way. Um, looks like mine. Maybe that's why.

Tiffany,
Before I saw the Zanzibar Highcahir, I really wanted the wooden Eddie Bauer highchair. I guess I am just glutton for punish.

Eva,
Thanks for the link. It was funny to see that someone else is as goofy as I am. I am going to buy some woolite tonight. Wish me luck!

Your mom is a very crafty person. She made all of your curtains, and all of the baby's bedding? She must be superwoman or something. And you're right, our cribs look very similiar:)

I loved the Zanzibar theme - I think it came out after I had already gone with sheeps theme we picked.

I wouldn't be surprised if you could actually handwash it (treat it with a stain removed, handwash in cold, dry flat). You probably know this, but the dryclean tag is often added just so the manufacturer doesn't have to deal with any difficulties if the consumer doesn't wash the thing properly - "dry clean only" is their get out of jail free card.

Furthermore, after you've washed or dry cleaned it, I wonder if you couldn't Scotchgard it?

You don't have to twist my arm to add my to the list. :-)

A dry clean only high chair cover! WTH? That just doesn't make any sense...aside from that, the theme is very cute! I love themes too.

You got it right, we went for plain and neutral, wished our looked something like your!

All so cute - shame about dry clean tho, arent manufactures strange sometimes and inconsiderate!

Hahaha. Our theme was "stuff people loaned us", because there is NO way that I'm spending $200 on an exersaucer. So my house is decorated in "mismatched."

Ha ha! What retard DESIGNED a high chair cover that is Dry Clean Only???? I agree with catizhere, machine wash it, and lay it flat to dry.

(Though I've never been brave enough to wash a suede skirt in the washing machine...)

And this makes me retarded...but I looked at your blog name and how I had spelled it...for about 3 minutes. Before I finally figured out how I'd misspelled it. Ha ha
