Okay, so apparently I spend WAY more than everyone else. The only good thing I can note is that we rarely ever eat out anymore. So although we spend a lot at the grocery store, we still spend way less than we did before. In addition to our huge grocery bill, we used to eat out about 3 times per week too. So, we're making some improvement.
My main problem with saving money is coupon clipping. Most of the stuff we buy is organic. I rarely ever see coupons for these items. Another problem is my husband's Ben & Jerry's addiction. He wants ice cream every night. And if he is eating ice cream, I am eating ice cream too. And finally, I buy too many convenience foods - like pre-made veggie pot pies or soy ravioli or Amy's burritos. I have been making an effort cook more, but these expensive items are usually always included in the weekly line-up.
So, I have decided to implement a few new plans to help us save some dough. First, I am going to make muffins or scones from scratch for John's breakfast. He usually buys a few bagels or donuts in the morning. Second, I am going to start serving more left-overs for lunch. I have this really bad habit of forgetting about left-overs. I frequently find two month old lasagna in the back of my fridge. And finally, I am going to start scouring the internet for coupons. They have to be out there somewhere.
Honestly, I was hoping that all of you would have similar sized grocery bills. I feel a little embarrassed by my excessive spending.

I think the home cooked scones are a great idea - and one other thing you might want to do (if you're not already) is meal plan for the whole week ahead of time. And definitely eat those leftovers - we actually eat them for both lunch and dinner sometimes because they're so damn good. Good luck! Let us know how your budgeting goes in the near future!!
Check out Coupon Suzy, that's a good site for brand-name coupons. Also, The Grocery Game is a pay site (very minimal, like a few dollars a month) but totally worth it -- they basically tell you where to find ALL The coupons you need and how to combine them to get things for cents, or free. We tried it for a while and loved it, but I let it slip and haven't gotten back on that. (I should).
Also, we are currently eating out about 2 times per week in addition to our grocery bill... and we need to stop it. Plus we work out of the home, so meals out of the office at lunchtime add to our bills.
Basically we're no better than you.. it's just divided differently!
Oh, and another thing we've considered trying (haven't done it yet, intimidated by cooking I am) is Once a Month Cooking. The Once-A-Month-Mom site has a GREAT guide, and they put the entire menu, directions, etc together for you, tell you how to freeze everything, etc. They even report on sales on the items you need to do your once-a-month-cooking throughout the month prior, so you don't have to buy anything at full price (hardly). It's an amazing site, and everyone who tries it RAVES about it, but I just am intimidated by all that cooking!
-- From the Grocery Game Website:
"The cost for a 1 store membership is $10 every 8 weeks. That works out to about $1.25 per week. A 2 store membership is $15 every 8 weeks, a 3 store membership is $20 every 8 weeks and so on. Members report savings of up to $100 a week!"
It really blows that the healthier you try to be for your family the more it costs. Try to double up on size of the meal so you can either A. Freeze it for another meal or B. Use it as leftovers.
I know it's hard to stay on a budget and it takes time and tons of effort for sure. Some weeks I feel like I left the store and I had been totally screwed, others I feel like I had just robbed their asses because of all the good deals.
You will find what works best for you.. just keep getting advise from others as to what they do, that helps. :)
It really does sound that you will be saving lots of $$'s with what you are planning to do!
Making breakfasts & packing lunches has really helped us. Joe would do the same thing, buy a bagel or TastyKake & a container of oj at work, spending 3 or 4 dollars a pop when we HAVE it at home already. One day I handed him an egg&cheese muffin and a travel mug of oj to take to work with him & you would have thought I was Donna friggin' Reed! (old people will know who this is)
I always forget about leftovers too, PLUS Joe is such a big baby and he doesn't like leftovers (said in a very whiney voice)so I try to take whatever leftovers there are to work the next day for lunch.
I didn't comment on the first post because I was reading on my mobile and commenting from there really sucks. Anyway...
My bill is about the same as yours, if not a little higher. And I share your frustration with not being able to use coupons. And we too eat out more than we should, but I try to plan that as much as possible in that if I know that we are going to have a crazy week, I don't buy as many groceries.
Anyway, good luck. I'm trying a lot of the same things as well.
I also buy EVERYTHING that I possibly can buy organic and that definitely shoots my bill up by quite a bit. Some of learning how to whittle it down is just trial and error. I have also noticed that if I buy some organic stuff from Trader Joe's (do you have TJ's in NJ?) it is literally HALF the price that they sell stuff for at Whole Foods or other grocery stores. When stuff is on sale, buy in bulk. Also- once you figure out the ingredients for your burritos and stuff it is SUPER easy to make those yourself instead of buying pre-packaged. Eating leftovers keeps us from having to buy lunch stuff always. I always make sure I make enough for there to be lunch the next day... Good luck! You will totally figure this out!
Oh AND you can sometimes go to the websites for the organic products and they will have coupons that you can print out. I do this for our organic milk whenever possible.
for organic coupons, check out this site http://www.mambosprouts.com/
They have some good printable ones.
The once a month cooking thing is a great idea, but ya need to have a big freezer! I usually pick 2 or 3 recipes from there and make double batches, freeze all but 2 and go from there.
a) you are not dumb
b) you eat waaaaay better than i do - and when you eat healthy good stuff it is a little more pricey.
c) but i do like your plans and hope they work out. especially the muffins. and if john doesn't want them. i like muffins.
I was going to suggest thegrocerygame.com but it looks like someone else did that already.
Do you use EVERYthing you buy? Or are you like me and you buy a ton of food and don't use it all so your cabinets are full and you still go shopping?
I am working on that.
And don't feel dumb... you are helping the economy. :)
If I had that much to spend on groceries every week I would totally spend that!
don't feel dumb! Now you can start looking for ways to save. Everyone has already mentioned some great ideas! We meal plan and that has helped us a ton.
I have a great home made coffee cake recipe...super quick but lots o' sugar. Email if you'd like the recipe!

Don't feel bad... There's weeks where we spend way more than normal, which apparently averages $75 a week according to my husband - I'm horrible at math lol. For some reason those weeks we go over sticks in my head... I keep picturing a $160 WM total when I know we rarely get that high lol... But then there's some like this one we do great... we managed $10 this last week, much rejoicing was had! - But still it happens. Those are some good ideas though... and like someone said, it is possible to get organic on sale, at least sometimes. We do SunHarvest for that... and they even have coupon books w/ some of those more expensive items... not sure if other places do that or if yall have one nearby though. Unfortunately nothing in the booklets is stuff we want lol. Good luck!
Honestly if I was a vegetarian we would be spending a lot more. Plus do you buy organic?
don't feel embarrassed! that is what we are all here for... to ask questions and learn from each other! it sounds like you've come up with a few great ways to start being more thrifty so good job. :)
plus eating anything organic or vegetarian is so much more expensive!
If you want-I have some great vegan recipes for muffins. Let me know. Way to go christy! You rock.
