After a whole year of complaining, I finally convinced my husband that we desperately needed a swing set for the children. Last weekend we ordered this little beauty...
It is fabulous! But it is also EXPENSIVE. Oops.In our backyard, we have a shitty chain link fence. It is tacky and old, but it confines our dog, so I try not to complain too much about it. However, our neighbor is selling her house, so it is sitting empty right now. John thought that this would be a perfect time to replace the fence, because we could rip out all of the chain link without having to ask for permission. And since I hate the chain link fence, I wholeheartedly agreed with his plan. We want this...
And guess what? It is EXPENSIVE.Obviously we only like saving money in theory.

I totally do NOT get that saying either. I can't figure it out. Also, every time I save a bunch of money something expensive comes up: need new hot water heater, car needs new brakes, Nordstroms is having a summer sale... stuff like that ; )
Love the new fence. Chain link is depressing. Yet there must have been a lot of it around during my childhood because I have strong sense memories of the sound it made when you tried to climb on it, how it dug into your hands, and even how it smelled (you heard that right - I have a super nose and it's not a good thing - far more bad smells than good in this world...) Of course I may have these strong memories from last summer when I had to climb over a chain link fence with my three year old - best mom ever!

Yep, that fence is really expensive. We ended up compromising and getting a nice cedar fence instead. We used ACE fencing and they did a great job in just one day.

when ever i feel guilty about blowing large chunks of money i always sing some old country song about how you can't take it with you :)
LOL I tend to like expensive things too... We end up deciding between several factors. If its gonna last longer... its worth the investment. If its something safer... its worth it. If its healthier... also worth it, but depends on if we can swing it lol. If not do we really need the crappier version either? So on and so forth... We also try to budget for certain things... because like I said... I have expensive tastes lol. I'm learning to do w/out more often than not though... or find ways to get it cheaper.. that's always fun!
Think about it this way: the swing will save you gas money from taking the kids to the park so much. :)
And the fence is an upgrade and will mean more $$ if you decide to sell your house. :)
I so want a fence - but that will probably have to wait until next year. Wood and nails cost a ton.

Thanks for the comment on my blog. It makes it {slightly} easier to know that other people are struggling with money too. And saving money is WAY hard... But I am jealous of the new fabulous swing set. Looks like fun.
Um- we have no money to save and I want a $600 dollar stroller. haha When is our play date/ I want to come play on that awesome play set.

Fence and playground - you guys are going all out but it will be so nice to see the makeover your back yard is about to have. Fuck it - you can just pay it off next year, lol.
i love the new "swing set"; i know porgie and izzy will too:) and that fence rocks, christy!!! i am getting ready to put something similar up right after i get those replacement windows.
