Miss frugual breeches

Carrie left a comment on Friday's post about me using the GPS on my cell phone. I don't have a cell phone. I know it is hard to believe, but I manage to function just fine without talking to my friends all day or obsessively texting people. The main reason that I don't have a cell phone is the cost. We have a home phone, and my husband's work pays for his cell phone, so getting myself a cell phone just feel frivolous and goofy.

Not having a cell phone often makes me feel like an odd ball. People always say things like, "YOU DON'T HAVE A CELL PHONE?! I couldn't live with my cell phone!" Ummm...really? I think talking on the phone is overrated. Additionally, I have grown to hate how other people seem to always be distracted by their damn phones. JUST PUT IT AWAY! Geez people. And my number one pet peeve is spouses who call each other constantly. My friend Karla's husband calls her no less than 20 times in the course of an hour. If John called me that much, I would probably divorce him.

Other times, I really wish I had a cell phone. For example, the farm we visited for apple picking is about 40 minutes from my house. To get there, I have to drive through a HUGE state forest. There are no businesses or houses for miles and miles. Everytime I drive on that stretch of road I get nervous. What would I do if my van broke down? It definitely wouldn't be safe to walk with the kids on that winding country road. How long would I have to wait before a police officer happened to drive by? In those instances, I really want a cell phone, and I curse my frugality.

But despite my irrational fears, I think I will continue to go without a cell phone for now.

For our anniversary last weekend, Joe bought me a fancy-schmancy 3G internet, slide out keyboard, touchscreen, missile launcher cell phone. Don't get me wrong, I love it. I really do.
But, I was perfectly happy with my prepaid Tracphone. It cost me maybe 20 bucks a month. I only use the cell when I'm at the beach and Joe is home. I use it to text him when the kids & I get to the trailer on Friday nights to let him know we're there and everyone is ok, the trailer didn't get eaten by bears or whatever weird stuff he worries about.

I *have* downloaded a bunch of math, spelling and connect the dots games for the kids, knock-knock jokes for Will, some fashion dress-up-app for Maggie, and a little bit of music for myself. I know I won't become one of "those" people with the phone either in my hands or stuck to my ear at all times....I don't have anyone to talk to that much anyway.

I only have a prepaid phone for work (only the schools can phone me) and use it when I am out of town for Kendryk's appointments, people wonder why I don't text or do a billion things on it, if we didn't go south for appointment's or my work(call in basis with no # due to the fact that I clean empty units for a living) than I would not own one.

And GPS in the phone?

In the US I just had a cheapo prepaid thing for car-related emergencies.

I have a fancier camera etc. one here. It's like the law in Sweden. I even text.

What? You don't have a cell phone? ;)
I can't stand the obnoxious people who can't put their phones down. Sometimes it's just plain rude and annoying.
That said, I love my cell phone. We don't have a home line, so it's pretty much essential if I ever want to talk to people.

I hate how people are so into their phones. I don't use mine often, but I love that I know if my car broke down or something, I had it there. Texting bugs the crap out of me.

I have a pay as you go tracfone. The phone was $30. I pay $20 every three months to put 120 minutes on my phone. It's for emergencies only. You can even text if you need to. I hate talking on the phone.
