Did you like my last post? Not really my style, but I thought it showcased some of my good mothering skills. And now, (because I want to make all of you feel like excellent parents - which I am sure you all are) I am going to tell you about one of my horrible parenting skills.
I cuss. A LOT. I have tried to stop on numerous occasions, but it never sticks. Within a week or two, I always end up cursing like a sailor again. I always try to rationalize my behavior. I naively tell myself - They are just words! Why are there so many negative connotations attached to silly words like bastard or bitch or shithead? My kids will be fine if I cuss.
But I was wrong. Horribly wrong. Porgie has decided that her new favorite phrase is, "That is so fucking annoying." I honestly don't remember using this phrase excessively, but apparently I did. And Porgie REALLY likes it. She has uttered these words about 542 times in the past 24 hours. Everything she encounters is "so fucking annoying."
I thought that hearing her cuss wouldn't be a big deal, but it is. Those foul words sound so horrible coming out of her sweet little mouth. I hate that I taught her this. I suck.

Oh - but it's kind of funny... To other people.
I think that you can probably end that easily enough - but you have to stop doing it yourself. Easier said than done of course!
I'm constantly astounded at my ineffectual paranting skills. I have of yet to figure out how to make my kids listen to me. My husband says "spankings" but my four year old is a "sensory seeking" special needs kid and he thinks regular spankings are funny as opposed to shaming. Since I'm not willing to actually hurt him with serious beatings, spankings are out. And time outs? Kind of hard to enforce when they're not listening to me anyway..."You sit on that step and don't move" - yeah right...
Um yeah, I have to admit that I have the same problem. My parents both cussed like sailors and I too picked up on it. Now once I was old enough I knew the difference between good words and bad words. It's VERY hard for me to stop cursing all together. It's like apart of my vocab that I can't get rid of. Kinda like terrets - just slips out at the most perfect time. Brea has picked up on my bad habit and slips every now and again. My husband get's so pissed off at me but it has gotten better because she knows it's a bad word and calls me out on it. Give it time - if you can't cut back or stop she will eventually learn the difference between bad and good words and use them like she should.
I'm sorry I laughed my ass off though because I can just see her cute little self say that, lol! Good luck babe!
My husband has the same issue. lol. I remember the first time my stepson said shit... he wasn't even able to form sentences yet. LOL.
My daughter is going to be hell on wheels, I just know it...so I imagine she'll have a colorful vocab too.
OMG, I'm laughing out loud on my couch right now.
Gage just said, "What's so funny?"
I cuss waaaaaaaaaaaaay more than Hubby.
I actually mouth cuss words now so that I don't have to say them out loud. You would think that if I can actually censor myself to be quiet w/ the cuss words that I'd just stop cussing completely...but no.
We also speak in code around here.
"JA" = jackass (a favorite here)
Luckily----the 1st cuss word Gage said, was a complete reproduction of what just flew out of Hubby's mouth. I was sooooo relieved, given the fact that Hubby was lecturing me daily about my cussing habit.
I know the feeling. You don't realize how bad it is until your kids start repeating you.
I am going to have this problem. My three year old has figured out "shit"
I am trying the whole "mommy shouldn't say that, no one should, if you hear mommy say that, then mommy is in trouble" deal. hoping her love of busting me will outweigh her love of cuss words.... lol
So with you on this one. Maggie was maybe 2.5 yrs & we were at Target(really???) some woman in a bmw, talking on her cell, no headlights on in a rainstorm cut us off. I uttered some little unpleasantness about her driving skills or lack thereof and promptly forgot about it. Once we got home, Joe asked Maggie how the shopping trip was. Maggie says, "I got new choos & Mommy said Futtin Bitz!!"
Oh, I think it's fine. Just don't react and she'll forget about it. (Honestly I think it's pretty hilarious, sorry, and, uh, yeah, I can totally hear you saying that phrase. :) )
Nora said "crap: for a few days and then got over it. My mom would have fainted!
It's just a style thing. It's not harming her. Obviously though if it's something you don't want her to do then you can't model it, but it's not inherently bad.
I curse but I mostly do it on the phone and really fast so we're okay so far.
My son loves the word fuck. I try too. I don't blog it, but I suck at this part too. Really. Really. Bad.
LOL! Ugh I have a potty mouth on me as well. Gob... I have been TRYING to replace my potty words with other ones... I am pretty sure I fail though. No, I am positive that I do. I believe I said "shit" no less than 3X this morning in front on my child. Whoops.
Oh no! I can't say anything though because I have the same problem. I gave it up for Lent... to try and stop something like that from happening. Yeah... it didn't work. So far she hasn't cussed... but I haven't stopped one bit. Its awful.
awe! I think it is pretty funny.
All of my kids have picked up bad words from me while sitting in the back seat of the car ~ i swear a hell of a lot while I'm driving.
Amanda x
sorry friend but that is too fing funny :)
i too have a sailor mouth - so far she only manages crap, but i fear worse is coming!
Oh no! We have that same problem in our house... I'm always yelling at Greg to watch his mouth!! So far we've done ok and the worst she's said is asking Greg if he's "pissed off". Ha!
Funny story: one of my coworkers told me that her granddaughter was playing one morning, turned around and looked at her mommy and said, "hey - get a snack you son of a bitch."
OMG it still makes me laugh.
I'm sure it'll pass... my fingers are crossed for you. :)
That is too funny!
By the way, this is Awake! This is my family blog since I've (temporarily?) shut down my other one.
We cuss A LOT too! Mom says my daughters first word will be 'fuck'. -sigh-
Sorry, but I have to laugh REALLY loud at this post. I am not horrendous in the language department, but there is certainly room for improvement. This was evident the other day when my little one repeated, over and over, my seemingly innocent slip... "shit".
She actually delighted in it.
OMG-I am sure she will stop by 1000. You are not a bad mom-my hubby curses a lot too.
I dont know how but I trained myself to say things like f..ing and f that..it sounds funny but it works for me because I used to sound like a truck driver.
