Bum Boob

WARNING - This posts contains lots of booby talk. I think I used the word boob at least 5,246 times.

I have a bum boob. From the very beginning of my breastfeeding adventures, my left boob has always had problems. During the first month that I attempted to breastfeed Porgie, I had reoccurring clogged ducts on the left side. It was very painful. After numerous hours of pumping and applying warm compresses, my boob would feel better. After I started pumping, I noticed that my left side only produced about half of what the right side produced. Fortunately, I rarely ever had clogged ducts after I started pumping. Thus, my bum boob problems became a distant memory.

After Izzy was born, he nursed frequently. And by frequently, I mean ALL THE DAMN TIME. I never became engorged or had clogged ducts for the first several months after Izzy's arrival. But, times are changing and Izzy no longer requests to nurse 23 hours out of the day.

About two weeks ago, I got a clogged duct on my left side. I pumped and pumped and pumped, but the side of my boob still felt like a damn rock. After nursing Izzy on the left side for about an hour, I felt some relief. This past weekend, I got another damn clogged duct in my left boob. I pumped and pumped and nursed and nursed, but nothing helped. My boob was throbbing, and I was in near constant pain.

After an entire day of agony, I decided to try a different nursing position. I got Izzy into the football hold, and I nursed him for about 20 minutes. Miraculously, the duct came unclogged, but my boob still hurt. It continued to hurt on Sunday, and it still hurts today.

I think my boob is broken.

awe! I exclusively pumped for four months and bottle fed Eliza breast milk. I had too many breastfeeding problems to recount.I blogged about it in Jan. I had the same problem with one of my boobs. I had to pumnp and nurse Eliza a little just to get some relief.- or I would go in the shower and play shoot the milk. When I weaned from pumping I would be clogged every other day. I feel your pain!

Try taking lecithin. That really helped me with clogged ducts. Good luck!

Hey don't forget to change the membranes in your pump!

Sorry! Have you tried putting heat or cold on it? I did both that & the feeding/pumping thing you mentioned when I got one... took a couple days but went away - thankfully no prob sense... but it hurt!!!

Like Jeninacide, I'm now in the biting phase.. :-(

Also, if you aren't on there... cafemom has a BF group where you can get a lot of advice... There's a bit of drama sometimes but I've gotten some good info too.

I second the lecithin. It worked for me too. Hope it gets better for you.

You are mighty popular woman to have that many responses so quickly to a post. I must say I am jealous!! :P

I understand what you are going through... I have a bum right boob. It's about a half cup smaller than the other and never had as much milk. I ALWAYS started Rawni on that side to try to up it, but it was just 'broken' too. :)

I'm so sorry! Clogged ducts are awful. I got them a few times. The other Eva suggested I take lecithin and I have been taking it every day for over 6 months and haven't had a clog since (knock on wood many times here). I started taking lots per day, and now just one at night. When I had the clog, the position that worked best for me was kneeling over the baby, with the baby propped up on the bed. It felt strange and he was weirded out but it worked. And just mixing up the position more generally, and compresses and lots of massage, as you said.

When I would pump I got a lot more on the right than the left, especially in the first few months. Not sure why. I think eventually they evened out after months and months of demand.

Good luck! It's a tough thing to navigate but you're doing reat!

Lecithan is really amazing like Eva said and also check out kelly mom at http://www.kellymom.com/bf/concerns/mom/mastitis.html#usualtreatment.

I had this too and it hurt but it will pass once your milk gets used to Izzy nursing what he needs. It does kill. Take it slow and I am sorry it hurts. Put a heating pad on it too.

My left boob also gives about 1/2 of what my right one does. The only advice I have is that my lactation consultant told me that once you have a plugged duct it can be very succeptable to reclogging even once it gets better because it's been injured (I guess why it still hurts you). So just be careful with it even once you think it's better. That's all I've got. Good luck.

nnnGICK! I got mastistis with my first. It was more painful than the labor.

ps... I had my kid's pictures taken at 3, 6, 9, 12, 18 and 24 months too! They look so different in each! I'm totally glad I did it. You'll never be sorry.

I had problems with continuous plugged ducts... I can still feel the relief when Ellie would eat and unclog it for me... AHHHH, it felt so good! I would always be a little sore after a few days of a clog releasing.

We mastered the football hold and the side laying position and both of those helped since she came at my boob in different directions... I eventually learned where she needed to eat from in order for me to get the clog out. Sounds like you are getting it down. Hope your tata starts feeling better!!
