New problem

We are soooooo close to being finished with the basement.  The walls are painted, the ceiling and lighting is finished, the carpet has been installed, and most of the furniture has been moved into the rooms.  But the windows are still lacking molding and I have to hem the curtains (which I am not even sure I can do).  I am hoping we get everything done next weekend.

Since the basement is almost finished, I have moved on to fretting about the dining room. Originally, I was going to move my new table (that seats 6-8 people) into the dining room.  We still have our old kitchen table (only seats 4) in the crawl space, so I was going to put that back in the kitchen.  Our family can only fit at the new table, so the small kitchen table was more for show than for actual use.  But then John pointed out that our dining room is carpeted and that our 1 year-old really likes to throw food.  I don't want him to ruin our carpet, so I don't really want to move the big dining room table into the dining room now.  But it seems extra stupid to have the little table in the formal dining room and the big nice table in the kitchen.  What else can I do?  I can't let him destroy our carpet.  A friend suggested that I put down an area rug, but it seems a little silly to buy a rug to put on top of a rug.  And if I spend money on a new area rug, I am sure I won't want him to ruin that either.  GAH!  If I had more money, I would rip up the carpet and refinish the hardwood floors.  But alas, I am poor.

So, at least for now, I guess I am going to put the small table in the dining room, and we'll continue eating at the big table in the kitchen.  I love how nothing ever works out the way I had planned.  But before I move any of the furniture around, I have to repaint the dining room.  I think I am going to go with a dark blue.  I am sooooo over painting, but I guess I can do this one last room.

You could put down a waxcloth tablecloth in a fun and/or matching/coordinating pattern! So easy to clean! Tons here in Sweden. I can send you one!

We have a rug on top of our carpet in the living room. The carpet is all stained, and I hated it, but couldn't afford to replace it, so we bought an $80 rug from IKEA in a contrasting color. (light beige carpet, navy blue rug) I think it looks nice. Plus you wouldn't feel stressed if your kid throws food on an $80 rug, as opposed to your carpeting.

OR another option that does unfortunately cost some money is replace with wood laminate. We had carpet in our dining room and it was so nasty after 5 years with children we couldn't handle it anymore. So we got the nicest laminate we could afford. And I LOVE it. But, yeah, if you're out of moola, I suggest the rug.

Laminate is a great answer or you can buy one of those plastic things that go over the carpet. Easy to clean up!

I like the tablecloth idea. Who cares? You will the only one to see it and you can have several so you can have some in the washer and some in use. Enjoy your table in the dining room.

We have a rug on our carpet too. It was pretty inexpensive (Target) and it works for protecting the carpet. Think of it this way... soon your baby will be big and won't throw food. Enjoy your table and baby now!!! Love the idea of dark blue paint. Can't wait to see what the finished result looks like.

I'd do a rug... Maybe one that's easily washable.

we had rugs under both of our tables back home - and yes during the baby throwing things stage it kinda sucked, but like everyone else i agree - it's totally worth the cheap rug. ikea, target even walmart. and then when you have a little more cash flow rip that carpet out and put down some fancy floors!!

can't wait to see all the updates!!
