When did vacations turn into work?

My husband is taking his vacation in a few weeks. I wish we were traveling to some far away beach to relax. But we're not. Not even close. Instead, we are going to be working. Yuck!

Since the kids are too little to enjoy the beach, and we are too poor to stay at the beach, we will be working on casa Cakerwaker. We have many projects planned - building a new shed in the backyard, repainting the foundation on the house, having the living room and dinning room carpet professionally cleaned, and replacing the faucet on the kitchen sink. I am excited about updating the house, but I am dreading the actual labor. Actually, I don't know why I just wrote that. I am not going to be doing any of the labor. My poor overworked husband will be doing most of the hard work.

I feel bad that John has to work all year, and then has to work on his vacation too. Why can't we just win the lottery already?

Fortunately, John is also taking off a week in December. I am seriously considering going back to Kentucky for Christmas. My grandma is nearly 80, and she is constantly asking to see Izzy. I know this sounds morbid, but I am afraid that if we don't go back this year, she might never get to see my baby boy. So, I am trying to figure out a way to go back in December. But that sounds suspiciously like work too.

I always say that I need a vacation from my vacation. I am too poor to ever do anything so we do home projects too. And I end up having to help. :(

Ahh, you've discovered the secret. Life is all work! :(

But some of the work can be fun, or fulfilling. Getting work done around su casa will be quite nice, I think, once it's finished.

Yeah - I've found that once I had kids, I can never have a real vacation. To me vacation means being able to do nothing for hours and read more than 10 pages of a book at a time. It's just something to add to the list of things to cheer me up when my babies grow up and leave me.

i even think even weekends have turned into work!!

poor husband, i am always throwing honey-do items his way and then making him feel guilty for not spending enough time with us on the weekends :(

who knew being a grown up meant working all the time?

The work never seems to end does it? There is always something that needs to be done. It's crazy.

I hope you are able to see your grandma. I am sure that would be so special to her and you, espeicially her seeing the little ones.

We are too poor to go anywhere on vacation too. : ( I am hoping my parents will just pay for us to go to Hawaii or something... but I probably shouldn't hold my breath ; )

UGH. I hate when my hubby takes vacation days without an actual vacation planned. He gets restless and bored and I feel like I have to entertain him. Honestly, I think he prefers to have a "honey-do" list set out for him.

I like being able to work on the house...if I had dedicated time to do it. Me with Zander trying to get anything done doesn't count.

Yeah, the family trip sounds a little like work...but it would be a really nice thing for you to be able to do for your Grandma. And get some pics so Izzy will have those when he's older too.

well, it may not be full of rest & relaxation, but your "staycation" will certainly be productive!

At least at the end of the holiday you both will be able to sit back and feel that alot had been achieved. I love that feeling.

I just visited grandparents for the same reason. Sometimes these things just have to be done.

Have fun watching John sweat!

I had a good time in OBX -but you are so right- vacation with little ones is work. And we have stayed home many a vacation to do stuff on the house and it stinks! We are going to Kansas to see Pete's brother in Nov. and I am already starting to dread the travel.

we do the same things on our vacations...although this year we have stolen away for two camping trips...
oh wait...
those were TOTALLY work. just outside in the dirt with bugs chasing two children and praying that the bears and wolves were more scared of us then we are of them.

Yes, beach is my first choice too for vacation trips.
