To swaddle or not to swaddle

We have been swaddling Izzy in a blanket for a few months now. At first, it seemed to help him sleep a little better at night. After a week or two, he reverted back to his old habit of waking every two hours. I stubbornly continued to swaddle him, hoping that he would sleep better.

Now, at 4 months old, Izzy barely fits into his swaddle blanket, but he can't settle down without it. He doesn't even like to nurse unless he is tightly swaddled. This is a major problem when we are in public or at a friend's house. My stubborn little boy will go 4 or 5 hours without nursing, if I don't swaddle him.

The most annoying part is that Izzy fights being swaddled. Sometimes, I have to enlist John's help, just to get his little arms down. And when he gets really pissed, he just busts right out of the swaddle. Some nights, I have to reswaddle him three or four times.

Basically, Izzy is too big and active to be swaddled, and I want to stop, but I am afraid that he won't sleep or eat.

Regardless of my fears, it is time to stop. I am actually thinking about putting him to bed unswaddled this weekend. Wish me luck!

He looks like he hates it, but he really loves it.

Oh lord, your post just made my womb twitch. I MISS the scent of freshly swaddled, warm baby forehead.

Can you buy a bigger blanket?? LOL!

Kristi,
You are funny! Ha ha ha! Bigger blanket? Izzy weighs 20 pounds! Unless they make swaddle blankets for toddlers, I don't think I am going to find a bigger blanket!

God, he IS big. As for bigger blankets, you can use a regular blanket if it's a nice stretchy cotton. I never used a special swaddling blanket. OR, you couldjust give up. We did when Baby Nora was five months or so bc she could escape it. OR duct tape?

I can't believe that Izzy already weighs more than Taylor! I hope this weekend goes well for you if you do try the non swaddle!

It's time to abandon the swaddle! He will eat because he'll get hungry and he will sleep because he'll get tired. It's just a habit for him. He's a swaddle junkie. But if you pull it, he'll learn VERY QUICKLY. Try it and watch him surprise you.

GOOD LUCK.

I remember when Max stopped wanting to be swaddled. You could get him that things that nuzzles him so that he does not turn over. I know they have them at Target. I forget what they are called-but they snuggle the baby in the middle for safety. Maybe he would like that. Good luck!

I feel your pain. My 6 month old still needs a swaddle. It has helped her so much. We use big blankets and her kiddopotamus. One mom told me she cut leg holes in the kiddopotamus when her kids got too big!

Coleton has that SAME blanket. He hates being swaddled though except for RIGHT after his bath when he's cold. Once he's warmed up he kicks off any swaddle regardless of how tight. GOOD LUCK!

I used the "miracle blanket" when Ainsley was swaddled and she wasn't able to get out of it until she was about 5 months old. Then, we just weened her off of it. I was worried it was going to be awful, but one rough night and we were good!

I am a do what works Mom. He needs sleep and so do you. If swaddling works just use a bigger blanket. I did like the idea of swaddling all but his arms. See what works.
