The dining room

We ultimately decided to put the smaller table in the dining room because of the carpeting.  But I think it looks great!  The blue and the oak really go well together (according to me).  The table is a little small for the room, but I think it gives the illusion of spaciousness.

Since we might be selling our house sometime in the next year or so, I am interested in hearing your opinion.  Be honest, what do you think of the dining room?

Chit chat

We have been busy.  Like super busy!  We finally finished the basement, I repainted the dining room (John helped), and now I am busy getting supplies to repaint part of the master bedroom.  I would show you pictures, but I am not smart enough to remember to take any during the day.  I promise that I'll try to get some good pictures tomorrow.

I love when I get in these moods.  I am all about getting shit done around here!   I've been clearing out clutter and junk from closets and whatnot.  It is hard to explain, but I feel so much lighter when I get rid of all our crap.  It is fun to get new things, but I think I enjoy getting rid of it even more.  Weird, but true.

This is completely unrelated to anything, but I had the scariest dream last night.  It started out with me, John, the kids, and my cousin.  We were just sitting around the house, watching TV, and talking.  It was a beautiful sunny day, but suddenly the sky darkened.  My cousin looked out the window and screamed, "THEY ARE COMING!"  I was filled with panic.  I kept screaming, "WHO IS COMING!"  No-one answered.  I took off running to find Guppy, and then I woke up.  My heart was racing, and I was shaking.  It was intense.  Then I couldn't go back to sleep for about an hour.

I don't really know where I am going with this post.  I just wanted to chat for a little bit:)

Dining room stuff

We took a couple of weeks off from the home improvement stuff due to illness and oral surgery, but now we are back at it.  I have finally selected a paint color for the dining room.  It is a lovely shade of blue.  The dining room was an olive green, which I really liked.  Originally, I was going to repaint it the same color (I am only repainting it because of some blemishes the kids causes when it was the playroom).  But then I started thinking about the colors in my house.  Almost everything is brown or green, but green is definitely the predominate color.  My dining room, kitchen, master bedroom, and Porgie's room are all green.  They are different shades of green, but they are still green.  So, I decided to mix it up a little bit and go with a deep blue.  I am excited and nervous to see how it comes out!

I have been busy prepping the walls.  My house was built in 1946, so it is nearly 70 years old.  The walls are riddled with imperfections, which drive me bonkers.  There is also wallpaper in every single room, including the closets.  It is even on the ceilings, which is just crazy.  The people who lived here before us just painted over the wallpaper, and when we were in the process of buying the house, I never noticed it.  But once all of their crap was gone, and we were standing in an empty house, I realized that we were screwed.  We didn't have the time to remove it all before our furniture arrived from Kentucky.  And, most importantly, I was 20 weeks pregnant and not willing to undertake that project.   We removed wallpaper in our first house, and it was a total pain in the ass.  To be fair, that house was over 100 years old, but it was still a huge project.  There were three layers of wallpaper in the living room.  THREE LAYERS.  And when I removed it, the plaster underneath was crumbling away.  I vowed to never remove wallpaper ever again.

Anyways, our current dining room had lots of little blemishes, which I sanded and patched and whatnot.  I am still not feeling up to removing that wallpaper, so I am just going to have to learn to love all those seams.  I am going to prime the walls and start on the trim tonight.  I am hoping to be completely done mid-week.

The most pathetic birthday story EVER

Yesterday was my birthday.  How did I celebrate?  With oral surgery, of course!  I love having gaping wounds in my mouth.  Actually, I was really excited about this surgery, because IT WAS THE LAST ONE!  I am so sick of thinking about teeth and staring at teeth in the mirror and paying a million dollars to the dentist/orthodontist/oral surgeon to fix all of my teeth problems.  I am sooooo ready to be done.  I just need to give myself two weeks to heal, then I am off to the dentist to get molds for my crowns.  Then I'll have two more weeks of waiting for the crowns to arrive.  THEN I AM DONE!  Of course, we all know that it won't go this smoothly, but I like to pretend that I live in a perfect world.

So my birthday was a bust.  I could only eat cold, soft foods.  On the plus side, we got ice cream after dinner!  On the not so great side, I was up vomiting in the middle of the night.  I didn't really eat much yesterday (my mouth hurt), and then I decided to take some of the pain medication the surgeon prescribed before I went to bed.  I woke up at 3am feeling nauseous.  I knew that I should get up and eat something, but I was just so tired.  I was hoping the sensation would pass.  Thirty minutes later, I was on the verge of barfing, so I got out of bed and opened a container of cottage cheese.  I took one little bite and went running for the bathroom.  I vomited.  Do you know how terrifying it is to puke while everyone in the house is sleeping?  The last thing I wanted was a bunch of kids awake in the middle of the night watching me ralph.

In summary, my birthday sucked ass.

ill

We are sick.  And when I say sick, I mean so sick that I can barely muster the strength to get out of bed in the morning.  I currently have a headache/runny nose/watery eye problem.  It has been going on now for a week and it just won't quit.  Porgie has the worst cough.  She coughs until she vomits everyday.  EVERYDAY.  The baby is fussy and congested and coughing too.  Izzy was sick, but he seems to be doing a lot better than the rest of us.

There has been no progress on the basement, or anything else for that matter.  My house is a disaster.  I am so looking forward to feeling better, so that I can walk across the living room without getting winded.

Since I have nothing else, let's look at some pictures of my adorable offspring from last week (when all was right with the world)...

New problem

We are soooooo close to being finished with the basement.  The walls are painted, the ceiling and lighting is finished, the carpet has been installed, and most of the furniture has been moved into the rooms.  But the windows are still lacking molding and I have to hem the curtains (which I am not even sure I can do).  I am hoping we get everything done next weekend.

Since the basement is almost finished, I have moved on to fretting about the dining room. Originally, I was going to move my new table (that seats 6-8 people) into the dining room.  We still have our old kitchen table (only seats 4) in the crawl space, so I was going to put that back in the kitchen.  Our family can only fit at the new table, so the small kitchen table was more for show than for actual use.  But then John pointed out that our dining room is carpeted and that our 1 year-old really likes to throw food.  I don't want him to ruin our carpet, so I don't really want to move the big dining room table into the dining room now.  But it seems extra stupid to have the little table in the formal dining room and the big nice table in the kitchen.  What else can I do?  I can't let him destroy our carpet.  A friend suggested that I put down an area rug, but it seems a little silly to buy a rug to put on top of a rug.  And if I spend money on a new area rug, I am sure I won't want him to ruin that either.  GAH!  If I had more money, I would rip up the carpet and refinish the hardwood floors.  But alas, I am poor.

So, at least for now, I guess I am going to put the small table in the dining room, and we'll continue eating at the big table in the kitchen.  I love how nothing ever works out the way I had planned.  But before I move any of the furniture around, I have to repaint the dining room.  I think I am going to go with a dark blue.  I am sooooo over painting, but I guess I can do this one last room.
